Mauro derives from the Latin Maurus, 'inhabitant of Mauritania', later 'of dark complexion'. The name was popularized by Saint Mauro (6th century), the first disciple of Saint Benedict and a key figure in the spread of Benedictine monasticism: tradition recalls him running on water to save his companion Placid.
